Let's talk Dining!

With so many different options to choose from, finding the perfect dining table can be quite a daunting experience. There are quite a few things to consider so here are our top tips to help aid your decision.

Measure Up

We always recommend marking out the footprint on your floor based on the number of diners you wish to seat. This is easily done with an old newspaper and some masking tape. Do take into consideration space required to push chairs back (without bumping into walls or other furniture you may have in the room). If you allow around 90cm on each side this will give you a rough idea of what you have to work with.

Choose your shape

Think about shape of the room the table is going in. If it is on the smaller side or quite square, consider a super sociable and informal round table. A longer, narrow room would perfectly suit a rectangular or larger oval shape. You could also go for an extending model for when you need those few extra place settings.

If you have a very small space, then a drop leaf table may be the perfect solution for you.

Consider the rest of your décor and surroundings. Ensure that whatever style you choose fits in with your lifestyle and your other style choices.

Material things

Let’s be honest, in 2020 the majority of families used their dining tables for home schooling and random arts and crafts! If you have a busy family then you will want to choose a table that will stand the test of time. Look for models made from reclaimed wood, it has already lived a life and will look better and better with age. Most importantly it is super easy to look after.

Elsdon Solid Oak

If you are choosing a table that will primarily be used for formal dining you may want to choose solid oak. It has a cleaner look, is amazingly hard wearing and will look fabulous for years to come.

All of our Oak furniture carries the FSC certification so whether you choose Oak or reclaimed wood you are doing your bit for the planet😊

Mismatched or matching? Whilst many of our ranges carry their own specific chairs, we find that most people like to mix things up a bit. Choosing various colours of chairs is an extremely popular choice or having a mixture of chairs and benches – great idea for families as kids do love to sit on a bench!

You could also buy a few extra chairs and keep them in other rooms in the house. Our Velvet chairs look just as good in a hallway or bedroom as they do at a dining table.

Consider the size of chair, how they tuck under the table, the seat height (particularly important as you want a comfortable eating position without getting arm ache!) and most importantly, comfort! Choose a chair that you could spend an evening sitting in and you won’t go far wrong.
